TŌ MĀTOU KŌRERO
OUR STORY
Founded in 1969, Te Māhurehure Cultural Society Marae was opened in Point Chevalier, for Ngāpuhi descendants from Waimā and Hokianga – who were living away from home. It represents a labour of love for the elders who first developed the marae and represents their life-long commitment – to manaaki the thousands of people here in Tāmaki Makaurau, Auckland.
Beginning with the purchase of land back in January 1969 for $29,000 (a bargain by today’s standards!) which took years of fundraising to pay off. It was first used as a rugby league club’s dirt-floored practice shed, built on an old tip and has expanded across generations and decades to become a smart, modern Marae with different whare and papakāinga as the culmination of a long held dream to create a gathering place and home for whānau, public, professionals and visitors.

Marae
Cultural gathering place
Includes all services necessary for Māori gatherings, events, kapa haka, noho, conferences and more.
Hauora
Health & Social Services
Kirimangu – is our health & social services division run here from the Marae. From health screening programmes, drivers licence uptake, COVID relief & food parcels we ensure people can come to us, here in Central Auckland for help when need be.
Papakāinga
Social Housing
Te Kāinga Atawhai – is our certified CHP (Community Housing Provider). We’ve built our own urban papakāinga here in Pt Chev as well as project manage and facilitate Social Housing projects in various areas around Auckland and Northland.
Hākinakina
Sports
We are proud to have a strong-standing legacy in the promotion of Māori Rugby League. We operate and fund our infamous Hokianga Storm Māori Rugby League Teams at Tamariki, Teina & Rangatahi ages.
Wānanga
Education
With our new global indigenous learning centre – Taumata o Kupe, we are able to facilitate or host wānanga (workshops), kura reo (language classes) and noho (overnight stays).
